Sudan Democracy First Group (SDFG) is pleased to present to you Zawaya, a journal devoted to critical thought, free inquiry, and public dialogue. Zawaya opens a space for reflection on questions of peace and security in Sudan and its regional sphere.
In a grievous humanitarian moment marked by catastrophic suffering and bearing grave consequences for the Sudanese people, and as war, violence, political fragmentation, and acute polarisation reshape the world around us, Zawaya arrives to open a new window for rigorous reflection on the deeper structures behind Sudan's crisis and for discerning the possibilities a more just future may hold.
This inaugural issue brings together a collection of insightful contributions on militarisation, feminist perspectives on war and peace processes, the mobilisation and militarisation of civilians, security sector reform, the weaponisation of social media, the impact of war on Sudan's children, reverberations of global events on the Sudanese crisis, and knowledge as a form of resistance.
Zawaya is published in both Arabic and English, linking Sudanese debates to broader conversations at the regional and international levels, while remaining firmly grounded in the Sudanese context.
